Description:
|
Andrea’s fame rests chiefly on the frescoes in the chapter house of Santa Maria Novella, also known as the Spanish Chapel. The program was probably worked out in the theological school attached to the convent. The central theme is the glorification of the Dominican Order. On the entrance wall are scenes from the Life of St. Peter Martyr, with the Road to Calvary, the Crucifixion and the Descent into Limbo opposite. The main scenes are on the side walls, on the left the Triumph of St. Thomas Aquinas and on the right (east wall), the Church Militant and the Church Triumphant. Scenes of the Pentecost, the Navicella, the Resurrection and the Ascension decorate the vault. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
