The inlaid marble mosaic floor is one of the most ornate of its kind in Italy, covering the whole floor of Siena Cathedral. This undertaking went on from 1372 to 1547, with about forty artists contributing. The floor consists of 56 panels in different sizes. The large panel in the north transept, The Slaughter of the Innocents (Strage degli Innocenti) is to a design of Matteo di Giovanni (1481).
