Description:
The Florentine Apollonia (Apollonio) di Giovanni trained under illuminators and specialized in work for the secular sphere, painting cassoni (chests), deschi da parto (birth trays), spalliere (panels attached to furniture or set into wall panelling), as well as illuminating manuscripts. In 1955 Gombrich was able to link two cassoni panels (formerly Jarves Collection) to Apollonio, completing the work of Stechow and thus ascribing all the works of the Virgil Master, Master of the Jarves Cassoni, Dido Master and Compagno di Pesellino to Apollonio. Apollonio introduced a host of new literary and mythological subjects to Renaissance painting. Cassoni (carved or painted chests) were frequently commissioned in pairs for weddings and paid for by the groom. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
