Description:
|
Giuseppe was apprenticed to Francesco Salviati in Rome from 1535, apparently assisted him in the decoration of a number of facades there, and seems to have taken his name "Salviati." In the mid-16th century, he lived in Venice and had a network of powerful patrons, eventually including the Doge. The painting is on the altar dedicated to the Purification of the Virgin. The mandatory subject of the altar painting is complemented by the eponymous saints of various members of the donor's family. The represented saints are Paul, Helen, Augustine, Bernardino, Nicholas, and Mark. (Source: Web Gallery of Art; http://www.wga.hu/in dex.html)
