Description:
|
Bartolomeo’s style developed to produce the powerful saints in the works of the 1470s, who, often seen from a low viewpoint, tower over the worshipper. This is seen in the paired saints in the St. Mark triptych (1474; Venice, Frari). Although still in a Late Gothic frame, this shows his style at its most advanced, with St. Mark seated on an early Renaissance throne, angels with swags and the diagonally grouped saints standing out against the sky and set in a continuous space. These saints are psychologically alive and their common mood gives unity to the altarpiece. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
