Description:
|
Located in the Bernardo Chapel (third south choir chapel). From 1464 until the late 1470s Bartolomeo enjoyed great success in Venice, painting a series of works for major altars in the Certosa di S Andrea, the Frari and SS Giovanni e Paolo, often under the patronage of leading Venetian families such as the Morosini and the Corner. In these he brought the Vivarini style up to date, gradually replacing Gothic frames with Renaissance ones and sometimes gold backgrounds with sky. The rich and graceful Renaissance frame is probably by Jacopo di Faenza. After the plague of 1631, the central part came to be called the Madonna della Salute. The upper panel is the Crucified Christ. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
