Description:
Shortly after his return to Venice in 1659 he painted the Brazen Serpent for the cathedral of S Pietro di Castello in Venice, a vast canvas characterized by swirling brushwork and an unprecedented dramatic power, emphasized by his free and bold handling. His celebratory canvas depicting the Venetian Victory at the Dardanelles (1660-1664), painted for the Sala dello Scrutinio in the Palazzo Ducale, is even more unrestrained. The battle was one of three at the strait Dardanelles (Hellespont) during the Cretan War (1645-1669), also known as the Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War.
