Description:
|
The Oratory of St. John the Baptist (Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista) is a 14th-century small chapel or prayer hall best known for its Late Gothic style fresco cycle (1416) by the brothers Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni. The nine scenes from the Life of St. John the Baptist on the west wall have chivalric themes derived from courtly art (e.g. the Très Riches Heures of Jean, Duc de Berry) and are mixed with details of contemporary daily life and personalities, all acutely observed. This invited members of the Confraternity to feel part of the New Testament events. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
