Description:
Although attempts have been made since 1977 (by Moran, Mallory, and others) to disassociate the image of Guidoriccio from the work of Simone, the evidence is not cumulatively compelling. The painting, however, suggests workshop intervention and has also been much repaired and restored. The figure, a spirited equestrian study, was probably intended to embody the military pretensions and aspirations of the Sienese Comune; it is strange that there is no inscription to Guidoriccio, who was Capitano della Guerra (1328-1333), here identifiable only by his heraldry and perhaps to his contemporaries by his face. The panoramic landscape is remarkable when compared with anything previously painted in Siena. Simone included in the scene a 'portrait' of the town of Montemassi and some siegeworks.
