Description:
After the 1577 fire at the Doge’s Palace in Venice, Palma Giovane received many commissions to redecorate, beginning in 1578. This complex painting is in the Sala del Senato. It commemorates a rather inglorious war against the League of Cambrai (formed by the pope, the kings of France and Spain, and the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) which went badly for Venice. In 1509 its enemy occupied Venice's mainland territories and threatened the city itself. The canvas depicts Doge Leonardo Loredan and represents the Venetians' resistance to the combined powers of Europe, symbolized by allegorical figures.
