Description:
The painting depicts the moment when Samson, after asking God to quench his thirst, drinks from the ass's jawbone with which he defeated the Philistines. The work was created as a decoration for a room in a palazzo of the Count Zambeccari, but was already for sale in 1644. In about 1664 it was bought by Cardinal Boncompagni, archbishop of Bologna, and given to the city hall senate room.
