Third Style wall fresco of a Maenad with a swirling cloak, painted against a black background. The Maenads, followers of Dionysus, carried the thyrsus, which is a wand or staff of giant fennel (Ferula communis) covered with ivy vines and leaves, sometimes wound with taeniae (hairband ribbons) and always topped with a pine cone. This Maenad also carries a tambourine or cymbal. (Source: Naples National Archaeological Museum [website]; http://cir.campania. beniculturali.it/mus eoarcheologiconazion ale)
