Description:
|
Verrocchio’s most famous painting, the altarpiece of the Baptism (Florence, Uffizi), was probably begun in the mid-1470s and was painted for San Salvi, Florence. It is the first large altarpiece in Florence to represent the scene, which had previously been the subject of sculptural and pictorial cycles and predellas. Apparently in the 1480s areas of the picture, which include the angel seen in profile, much of the landscape, and Christ’s face, were changed, repainted (in oil glazes) or added by the young Leonardo da Vinci, who was part of Verrocchio's workshop. His presence was documented there in 1476, but it is unknown when he started his apprenticeship. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
