Description:
|
The St. George and the Dragon, probably dating from the earlier 1340s, is signed on the horse with an anagram similar to Bolognese lawyers’ marks. Its blue ground and the mosaic-like border suggest that it was part of a cupboard or tabernacle. St. George’s anatomically impossible swastika-like pose, his flying coat-tails, and rearing horse contrast with the serene princess abruptly cut off by the hillside.
