Description:
|
Roman copy of the 1st century CE, From Tivoli. This sculpture is identified as a replica of the first imperial period (10 BCE-10 CE), of the famous Wounded Amazon made by the Greek sculptor Phidias. The woman wears a light chiton that covers only one shoulder and thus reveals her left breast. Although the head of the figure is ancient , it is not original to the work and was attached in 1775. The Amazons were said to have founded the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and they were a popular subject with Greek sculptors; this work is known as one of the Mattei type (derived from Phidias).
