Description:
The Pietà theme developed in Germany (where it is called the "Vesperbild") about 1300, reached Italy about 1400 and was especially popular in Central European Andachtsbilder (devotional images designed as aids for prayer). The term was first devised for a group of mainly sculptural subjects, including the Pietà. Andachtsbilder have a strong emphasis on the grief and suffering of Christ.
