Description:
|
From the Farnese collection, Roman copy of Greek original. The statue depicts Athena standing on the right leg, the left slightly retroflex. The right arm is stretched forward, the left is raised, holding a spear. The goddess wears a long chiton, thickly draped, covered by a himation tied on the right shoulder. Above is a gorgoneion (protective amulet) with the head of Medusa in the center and snakes wrapped in coils along the edge of an aegis. The head is crowned with an Attic helmet, adorned with a sphinx and two winged griffins. The sculpture features refer to a prototype of the second half of the fifth century BCE, by Agoracritus.
