Description:
|
Bronze statue of Augustus draped in a himation, from Herculaneum. Some scholars identify as the Temple of the Magna Mater (a basilica) a building situated to the north of the decumanus maximus, at the edge of the area uncovered by the excavations. This building, which is still buried, was explored (through tunneling) and stripped of its decorations in the 18th century. The finds include bronze and marble statues representing several emperors and empresses including Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius, Livia, Agrippina and Domitilla, and marble equestrian statues. Opposite this building was the seat of the College of Augustales, the association of officers of the imperial cult. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
