Description:
|
The vase, decorated with the technique of cameo glass, is shaped like a wine amphora. The body of the vase is illustrated with a grape harvest scene. On one side, immediately below the ribbed handle, a cupid places large bunches into a vat where another cupid, holding a thyrsus clearly in view, is engaged in treading the grapes. Cameo glass is cased glass of two or more layers in contrasting colors. The outer layers are carved, cut, or engraved to produce a design which stands out from the background. Discovered in Pompeii, 1837, near a suburban villa. (Source: Naples National Archaeological Museum [website]; http://cir.campania. beniculturali.it/mus eoarcheologiconazion ale)
