Description:
Wall fresco representing Isis-Fortuna from the House of Philocalus (IX.3.15), Pompeii, excavated 1847. At the center, Isis-Fortuna stands with a sistrum in her right hand and cornucopia in the left, her left foot on a globe on which is resting a rudder. From the left, a Lar Militaris gallops on a horse with a double ax (labrys) in his left hand; at right, an amorino with a torch reads a scroll "Philocalus votum solvit libes merito" (Philocalus has fulfilled his vow, willingly, as he should). This panel was thus probably part of a private household shrine (lararium).
