Description:
|
The central emblem of a floor mosaic, done in fine opus vermiculatum work, found in 1869 in Pompeii, the Casa del Granduca di Toscana (IX.2.27), also known as the House of the Wedding of Neptune and Amphitrite after this mosaic. Within a frame of leaves and ribbons, the bridal chariot of Neptune and Amphitrite is pulled by two tritons, one of which plays the double pipes. Below, Amphitrite appears again in her bridal dress, sitting on a sea dragon preceded by a triton playing the lyre and a Nereid. Cupids or amorini appears in both scenes.
