Description:
|
Part of the 2015 "Pompeii" exhibit which featured over 220 archaeological artifacts, most from the Naples National Archaeological Museum. The exhibit was designed to immerse viewers in settings of every day life in Pompeii, complete with state-of-the-art visual effects and soundscapes. In this wall painting from Herculaneum, white-robed priests of Isis perform a water ritual as chanting devotees line the steps of the goddess's temple. The cult of Isis was part of the syncretic tendencies of religion in the Greco-Roman world of late antiquity; the Romans having acquired it from the Hellenistic Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt. Women could participate and play key roles in the cult, this was not the case in the majority of Roman cults. (Source: Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; http://www.mmfa.qc.c a/)
