Description:
|
Formerly in the Riccardi Collection, entered the Uffizi in 1825. The theme of dancing Maenads is known from over 50 Roman marble replicas, harking back to a late 5th century BCE prototype attributed to the school of Callimachus (Kallimachos). This relief very accurately reproduces three of the six Maenads on the Athenian original. The finished work was decorated with gold leaf (for the hair, jewelry and thyrsus). [Information from museum label.]
