Description:
|
The picture is a companion piece to the View of St. Mark’s Basin from the Punta della Dogana (also in the Brera). This was a favorite view of Canaletto's and there are several versions. Canaletto was one of the founders of the genre of vedutismo (painted views), which achieved an extraordinary international success in the 18th century and reached its highest levels in representations of Venice, illuminated by a typically sparkling light. The question of whether Canaletto used the camera obscura on site has been debated, but he certainly used mechanical aids such as dividers, rulers and compasses in the studio.
