Description:

In a private collection. Later in 1914 Chagall travelled from Berlin to Vitebsk intending a three-month absence from Paris; however, the outbreak of war in August prevented his return and he remained in Russia and Belarus for eight years. Key events there were his marriage in 1915 to Bella Rosenfeld and the birth of their daughter Ida, which gave rise to a long series of paintings of lovers.
