Description:
This painting was a recreation (reduced in size) of one of the huge canvases Chagall created in 1921 for the new State Kamerny Theatre in Moscow, entitled Introduction to the Jewish Theatre. He took the painting with him when he left Russia in 1922 and still had it in New York, where he cut it down into two works and repainted it after the death of his wife Bella in 1944. This work is the left side of the painting, now titled Harlequins. Bella takes center stage, dancing in the midst of childhood memories of Vitebsk. The oil lamps are reminders that on the eve of her death, Bella had just completed the story of her youthful years at Vitebsk under the title Enlightened Lights.
