Description:
In January 1967, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Nice requested Chagall make a wall mosaic (the finished mosaic is 3.00 x 10.97 m). The Dean suggested the theme of "Odysseus, Mediterranean hero of wisdom," referring to the essays by Gabriel Andisio, published in 1945. The depicted scenes exemplify overcoming all temptations and cruelties by virtue, courage, and wisdom, and the final triumph of humanity, freedom, and peace.
