Description:
|
This statue is a hybrid of an ancient blue-gray marble torso, and Cordier's white and gray marble and gilded bronze, commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Its assembly from ancient and modern elements makes it an exotic, almost orientalizing work. Borghese emblems of eagles and dragons decorate the hem of her gown. Cordier created original sculpture in the Mannerist style, but was also active as a restorer of antique sculpture and worked on several pieces for the cardinal. Recent restoration, which removed a thick black patina added to tone down the statue to suit 19th century taste, revealed a gold clasp. (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Main_Page)
