Description:

The frescoes decorated the chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin in the Franciscan church of Santa Maria della Pace in Milan, from which they came to Brera following the Napoleonic suppressions (1808); they were transferred to canvas for conservation in 1900. In his later work in Milan, Gaudenzio’s art took a new direction; he placed greater emphasis on a more theatrical language of gesture and expression, and he drew closer to the prevailing style of Milanese Mannerism.
