Description:
As many other paintings by this artist, the work belongs to the series of genre paintings whose subjects directly refer to the Risorgimento (the military struggle to unify Italy). The artist interprets it through the life of humble people. The painting shows accuracy in the details of the furniture, which is full of references to contemporary events of the artist: there is a homage to Hayez’s Kiss hung on the wall at the end of the room and a bust of Garibaldi in the niche.
