Description:
|
Not originally conceived as a triptych, the three panels were painted between 1463 and 1470 for the chapel of the Castle of St. George (Castello di San Giorgio, part of the ducal palace) in Mantua, belonging to the Gonzaga family. From the Medici collections (acquired by them in 1588) in the Casino di San Marco; already in the Uffizi by 1632; the triptych was created (framed) in 1827. Epiphany marks the arrival of the Magi, so the central panel depicts the adoration of the Magi. This panel was probably in the chapel apse. The Virgin is portrayed with a crown of angels, according to a Byzantine model. (Source: Virtual Uffizi Gallery [website]; https://www.virtualu ffizi.com/)
