Description:
|
Painted in Toulouse. Matisse married Amélie Noémie Alexandrine Parayre in January of 1898 and in August he and his pregnant wife moved on to Fenouillet, near Toulouse, to stay with her parents. Their son, Jean, was born there on 10 January 1899. Matisse was in contact with Cezanne, Monet and Camille Pissarro and during this period he adopted the principal features of an Impressionist plein-air technique: pale grounds, broken brushwork, bright color and informality of composition.
