Description:

Painted in Nice. Marie Cuttoli was a collector and patron of modern French art; she was also responsible for reviving the art of tapestry weaving and carpet making in the modern era, particularly through her commissions to modern, and especially, Cubist painters. She commissioned a tapestry from Matisse; like most of her commissions, the artists submitted easel paintings that were then used by the weavers for a pattern. Matisse decided to do a work based on his recent work illustrating the poems of Stéphane Mallarmé; this painting is based on his poem "Faune". The tapestry was never realized, as Matisse regularly took back his painting and reworked it. (Source: Musee Matisse [website]; http://www.musee-mat isse-nice.org/)
