Description:
|
In 1930 Matisse went to Tahiti, via New York and San Francisco. It was not until five years after the trip that the artist sought to render his experiences in finished paintings, relying in part on studies realized on the spot, producing this tapestry cartoon which functions as a monumental souvenir of his voyage. This was a commission from Marie Cuttoli, to be made into a tapestry; like most of her commissions, the artists submitted easel paintings that were then used by the weavers for a pattern.
