Description:
In 1500-1501 Pinturicchio worked on Baglioni Chapel, S Maria Maggiore, Spello, painting scenes from the Life of the Virgin and the Young Christ. In the segments of the crossed vault over the wide, square nave the four Sibyls appear to be by an assistant, but on the walls the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Christ among the Doctors seem to be almost entirely by Pinturicchio. Here he toned down the overpowering decorative richness of his Roman projects, and there is a return to the limpid, serene narrative style of his early works. The large scene of the Adoration, with its lyrical, mysterious and picturesque landscape, is one of the highest achievements of 15th-century Umbrian painting. The Annunciation (signed bernardinus pictoricius perusinus) is depicted in the atrium of an aristocratic palazzo, with a view of the countryside at the center, while Christ among the Doctors is set in a large open square, with a varied assortment of figures and characters including the patron, Troilo di Rodolfo Baglioni (1463-1506), Bishop of Perugia.
