Description:
|
Raphael is said by Vasari to have been a pupil of Perugino, the master of Pinturicchio, who about 1500 was at the height of his powers. This work was moved to the Brera from the Church of San Francesco in Città di Castello in 1805. It is influenced by an altarpiece of the same subject by Perugino. Infrared reflectography reveals a dense set of lines converging on the temple door. These lines define the image perspective system, fully following that of "On the Perspective of Painting" by Piero della Francesca. The temple has been painted with such a precision that scholars have speculated the existence of a wood model. (Source: Brera Pinacoteca [website]; http://pinacotecabre ra.org/en/)
