Description:
|
The Austrian painter is named from a panel painting of the Adoration of the Magi (1493-1508; Vienna, Belvedere), in which two figures have been given the features of the Habsburg emperors Maximilian I and Frederick III. Among the works ascribed to the Master are three half-length paintings of the Virgin and Child; this is one. Elements derived from the Netherland, including facial types, especially those of the Virgin and infant Jesus, the faithful rendering of facts, distant landscapes in the background, and superb coloring, suggest his training there and distinguish this artist from other Tyrolean painters.
