Description:

Dwight Tryon became enamored with painting the character of one region: the countryside around his home in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. In 1900 a critic wrote of the difficulty of describing Tryon’s paintings: “We should have to coin our adjectives as he mixes his colors . . . for his golden-rod is not actually golden, his grass, not actually green.” Tryon was never fazed by such criticism, believing his works to be deeply personal transcriptions of nature that were difficult for most viewers to appreciate.
