Description:
Vasari first called him Stefano da Verona; in documents he appears as Stefano di Giovanni; he may have been the son of the painter Jean d’Arbois. His work mixes northern and Lombard traits. This is a late work and he remained faithful to the Late Gothic (International Gothic), to the end of his career. This work has the profusion of detail typical of the subject matter, with exotic and other animals rendered naturalistically. The painting is signed in what seem to be raised characters, next to a bunch of carnations at the bottom. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
