Description:
|
From Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, a center of Buddhist pilgrimage which flourished from ca. 6th century BCE to 12th century CE. There was a period of resurgence beginning in the 5th century CE. The sculpture of this period is executed in a recognizable idiom characterized by delicate forms and minimal iconographic details. Tara appears as a female bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism, and as a female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism. Whether the Tārā figure originated as a Buddhist or Hindu goddess is unclear and remains a source of inquiry among scholars. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
