Description:
|
From Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, a center of Buddhist pilgrimage which flourished from ca. 6th century BCE to 12th century CE. There was a period of resurgence beginning in the 5th century CE; numerous Buddha images were carved for dedication at Sarnath during the 5th and 6th centuries. They are executed in a recognizable idiom characterized by delicate forms and minimal iconographic details. Their clothing clings to their bodies but not in a realistic manner.
