Description:
|
The Garuda is a legendary bird or bird-like creature found in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain mythology. Garuda appears in both Hindu and Buddhist epics as the vahana (vehicle) of the god Vishnu. Garuda originated in India and migrated to Southeast Asia; this example is from Cambodia. Although Garuda is frequently portrayed as battling naga serpents in relief sculpture, in free-standing Khmer sculpture, it is more ambiguous: it may be one of cooperation, or it may again be one of domination of the nāga by Garuda.
