Description:
|
An antependium is the term for a carved, painted or embroidered panel that covers the front or a Christian altar. Signed by the artists, Caterino di Andrea Moronzone (carver) and Bartolomeo di Paolo (painter). Moronzone came from a family of Venetian wood carvers. It originally covered the main altar of the church of the Dominican convent of Corpus Domini, demolished during Napoleon's reign. It shows a typical subdivision of the scenes, punctuated by arches, in two superimposed registers. It is among the few surviving works of what was a prized Venetian art, wooden figurative carving.
