Description:
|
Large black and white mosaic with head of Medusa (or a Gorgon) in center. The upper panel represents a vessel moored by her stern to a quay; a boat is rowing away from her. The lower panel represents a city gate and a palm tree. This was a threshold mosaic to protect the house and its inhabitants. From the House of the Centenary ( IX.8.3-6), Pompeii, discovered 1879. The house was given its modern name to mark the 18th centenary of the disaster of 79 CE. Built in the mid-2nd century BCE, it was remodeled in 15 CE.
