Description:
Fresco from Pompeii representing a Priapus/Mercury caricature. Now displayed in the Secret Cabinet (Gabinetto Segreto) of the museum. In Greek mythology, Priapus was a minor rustic fertility god, protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. He was best noted for his huge, permanently erect penis, which gave rise to the medical term priapism. Here he is also shown with winged sandals, caduceus and holding a sack, all attributes of Mercury. (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Main_Page)
