Description:
|
In 1401, the Arte di Calimala (Cloth Importers Guild) announced a competition to design doors for the east side of the Baptistry, Florence. Each participant was given was given four "tables" of bronze, and was required to make a relief of the "Sacrifice of Isaac" on a piece of metal that was the size and shape of the door panels. Brunelleschi's panel consisted of individual pieces of the figures being placed onto the bronze framework, while Ghiberti's was, except for the figure of Isaac, cast in one piece. In 1402 at the time of judging, only Ghiberti and Brunelleschi were finalists, and Ghiberti won the commission. (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Main_Page)
