Description:
|
The room is named for the subjects painted on the vault, exalted as virtuous examples of rulers drawn from ancient history. The center hexagon features Caesar burning the incriminating letters of Pompey in an act of clemency. On the long walls are two tondi, one of Alexander saving the books of Homer (south wall), the other of the continence of Scipio (north wall). The curved vaults have six rectangles with full length standing portraits of Alexander the Great (east wall); Julius Caesar; Signifer or sign holder (south wall); Augustus (west wall); Warrior; Philip of Macedonia (north wall). The lower frieze in grisaille is late eighteenth century (the original has been lost). (Source: Palazzo Te [website]; http://www.palazzote .it)
