Description:
|
Fine-grained marble head of a woman, from the Museo dell'Alto Medioevo. First half of the 5th century, probably from Rome, possibly of Galla Placidia. Part of an exhibit, “Santa Maria Antiqua between Rome and Byzantium" when the restored Santa Maria Antiqua was first opened to the public in 2016. Galla Placidia was the daughter of the Roman emperor Theodosius I, was regent to Valentinian III from 423 until his majority in 437, and a major force in Roman politics for most of her life.
