Description:
|
Bronzino first received Medici patronage in 1539, when he was one of the many artists chosen to execute the elaborate decorations for the wedding of Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-1574) to Eleonora di Toledo (1522-1562), daughter of the Viceroy of Naples. This work is considered the first state portrait to depict a ruler's wife with his heir. The picture was intended to demonstrate the wealth, domesticity and continuity of the Medici. Eleonora had eleven children; two of her sons became grand dukes, although Giovanni did not survive to adulthood. (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Main_Page)
