The museum was created during the lifetime of the artist, with the support of the Minister of Culture André Malraux, and inaugurated in 1973. The auditorium or concert hall is intentionally left dark to emphasize its vividly colored stained glass windows, which Chagall specifically designed for the space. Chagall developed his glass painting technique with Charles Marq, and collaborated with him for over 20 years. The technique involves "flashing" (layering), very thin color stains on the glass, the use of acid etching, and finally painting on top. Chagall would do watercolor cartoons indicating the leading (lead cames) as well as the color and design, and Marq would adapt these as needed to make it structurally sound.
